Catherine Zeta-Jones checks into treatment facility for bipolar disorder

The 41-year-old actress was admitted last Wednesday to the Silver Hill psychiatric hospital, where they reportedly shared a ward with alcoholics & drug addicts.

Catherine Zeta-Jones has been treated for manic depression over the stress of her husband Michael Douglass battle against cancer.

Her publicist confirmed that they had received mental health treatment to help her cope along with her traumatic personal life.

After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder, they said.

Shes feeling great & looking forward to beginning work this week on upcoming films.

Douglas, with whom they has young children, last year battled stage throat cancer, enduring both chemotherapy & radiation.

The 66-year-old, who was today seen shopping for food in New York, announced in January that doctors had declared him free of cancer following four months of gruelling treatment.

A traumatic event can sometimes cause signs of the mood-altering disease.

Specialists say patients experience both elevated moods - which may lead to bouts of increased activity - as well as episodes of depression.

than descending in to deep depressions, patients can be outgoing, functional & often more productive than normal, reason why it often goes undiagnosed.

Unlike bipolar I, the 'up' moods do not reach full-on levels of mania.

People in a hypomanic state also often have a decreased need for sleep. They are also said to be at a higher risk of committing suicide.

Celebrities who have reportedly battled various forms of bipolar disorder have included Britney Spears, Stephen Fry & Charlie Sheen.

It is treatable with medication.

Dr Michael Roizen, Americas first Chief Wellness Officer, claims genetics may even be a factor.

If or more of your parents has the mood disorder, you are more likely to create bipolar disorder.

Other contributing factors include stress, disease, death, or a job loss. Also, researchers think that bipolar disorder may be caused in part by an imbalance in all or any of the brain chemicals norepinephrine, serotonin, & dopamine.

A witness at the hospital told the journal that the Welsh-born actress, who was made a CBE in February, appeared happy in the work of her stay.

Sometimes a traumatic event that causes lots of stress may cause bipolar II disorder to create. Other feasible causes include an abnormal amount of hormones & drug use, added a spokeswoman for the US Honour Society of Nursing.

Miss Zeta-Jones often appeared to be on edge in public in the work of Douglass treatment for throat cancer.

They apparently joined fellow guests for meals, jogs around the grounds & even poker sessions before bed.

In February, they flew in to a anger at a photographer in London, claiming they hit her as they & Douglas returned to their hotel after dinner.

They was close to tears at New Yorks John F Kennedy airport after they reportedly cut short a visit to the United Kingdom when her husbands conditioned worsened.

The Enquirer also quoted an observer who said they had really put the red wine away in the work of recent visits with Douglas to a Manhattan restaurant.

Miss Zeta-Jones claimed in 2004 that a stalkers threats against her left her so shaken that they feared they would have a nervous breakdown.

Claiming that the actress had suffered more sleepless nights than you could possibly know worrying about her husband, the source added: Catherine had lots of trouble coping. They was chain-smoking & drinking.

The Enquirer quotes a relatives source as saying: âItâs been the most difficult year of her life. Sheâs been through hell! The pressure has been  unbearable.â

It was tearing Catherine apart to see such a vital man as Michael in such a weakened state. I think they was crumbling.

Miss Zeta-Jones said as much in an interview last September in which they spoke of the pain of watching her husband dealing with cancer & her fury that doctors did not spot it earlier.

Her camp pressed a judge to reconsider his view that the case belongs in Michigan. The couple divorced there in 2000 after 23 years together.

The couples stress levels won't have been helped by moves this week by Douglass first spouse, Diandra, to revive her court battle for a share of his Wall Street: Funds Seldom Sleeps earnings.

His lawyer said her client's ex 'should be ashamed of herself' for seeking more when they had already received over $51 million in their divorce settlement.

Douglas' adult son Cameron, from his marriage to Diandra, was sentenced to jail last year on drug charges.

The actress' upcoming film projects include Playing the Field, a comedy starring Gerard Butler, Dennis Quaid Jessica Biel, & Dali, a biopic with Antonio Banderas.

Zeta-Jones & Douglas are parents to son Dylan, ten, & daughter Carys, who turns five on April twenty.
